NDT Surface Preparation
Laser ablation provides consistent, contamination-free surface preparation for UT, MPI, and LPI inspections and weld joint prep — with no embedded media, no chemical residue, and dramatically reduced prep time.
Clean Surface, Accurate Inspection
Laser ablation removes surface contaminants from weld joints, preparing a clean substrate for ultrasonic, magnetic particle, and penetrant testing — then enabling accurate defect detection.
How It Works
Surface oxides, rust, mill scale, and aged coatings are precisely removed by the laser beam, exposing clean base metal for examination. This non-contact process leaves no embedded media or residue that could mask surface-breaking defects or interfere with inspection sensitivity.
With the surface properly prepared, Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) can be performed more effectively, allowing magnetic fields and indication particles to respond clearly to cracks, seams, laps, and other discontinuities that contaminated or coated surfaces may conceal. Clean surfaces improve indication clarity, accuracy, and inspector confidence.
The same process is also highly effective for weld preparation and post-weld inspection readiness, removing oils, oxides, and contaminants that can impact weld quality or hinder nondestructive examination. The result is cleaner weld zones, stronger weld integrity, and more reliable MPI results.
Why Laser Ablation
Contaminant Removal
Effectively removes coatings, oxides, scale, and surface contaminants that interfere with inspection accuracy.
Base Material Preserved
Non-contact process preserves base material integrity and surface geometry — critical for accurate NDT readings.
Consistent Surface Quality
Provides repeatable, consistent surface preparation for UT, MPI, and LPI inspections. Eliminates operator variability.
Improved Defect Detection
Clean, uniform surfaces improve detection of cracks, corrosion, inclusions, and other subsurface defects.
No Embedded Contamination
Unlike grit blasting, laser ablation leaves zero embedded media in the surface that could mask defects or compromise readings.
Faster Prep Cycles
40–70% time reduction for surface preparation. Eliminates multi-step cleaning, blasting, and solvent-wash sequences.
Stronger Welds
Clean, oxide-free surfaces improve weld integrity. No contamination from oils, chemicals, or blasting media for reduced porosity and defect rates.
Less Rework
Consistent surface preparation improves weld consistency, reducing defect rates and eliminating costly repairs and delays.
How It Works
Surface Assessment
Evaluate existing coatings, contaminants, and inspection requirements to plan the preparation approach.
Laser Preparation
Remove surface layers with precise depth control. Laser parameters tuned for the specific inspection method.
Quality Verification
Verify surface meets inspection-ready standards. Consistent, repeatable preparation quality every time.
NDT Inspection
Clean, uncontaminated surface ready for immediate UT, MPI, LPI, or other non-destructive testing methods.
